iBeacon uses bluetooth technology to sense a smartphone and tablet and broadcasts messages to that nearby portable device. The BLE technology allows smartphones/tablets to carry out optimum actions when they are near an iBeacon.

Additionally, the iBeacon’s transmitter is compatible with various other devices such as USB sticks, or Bluetooth capable USB dongles .
